I read somewhere, of the horrific cost in human life during the two Great Wars (‘great?’)
  + 35 million military & civilian casualties in World War 1; + 15million dead;
  + 60 million dead in World War 2.

"Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives.... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly Country, therefore rest in peace" ATATURK, 1934

"In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place"
  Dr JOHN MACRAE, 1915

Born in 1940, I saw German bombers fly over us: saw our cities burning; as would German cities be burning... In the 1950’s I saw death from armed conflict: two young servicemen - who’d chatted with young blonde me not an hour before – blown up and killed as our armed convoy drove across Eoka-troubled Cyprus to our next troop entertainment gig. I saw what was left of those two young lads....

"We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow"
  Dr JOHN MACRAE, 1915

Through entertainment, I’ve tried to play my part in this life:

"But how can I meet the troops, and talk to them, with all this barbed wire around our tent.’ (in the desert)
‘Madame, the wire’s there to keep the buggers out, and away from you; not to keep you in!" (That was the RSM)

Fun and frolics all round, meeting the salt of the earth: our troops. In my Diamond Jubilee year in entertainment I can say: I played my part.

"If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders’ Fields".
  LT COL Dr JOHN MACRAE, 1915

Sir,

I, for one, will always keep that faith. Sleep in Peace: and all of you..........
