Charles Hazlett ‘Pug’ Upham,
VC and Bar
20th Canterbury Otago Battalion, ANZACS
The only combat soldier to win 2
“Does he deserve [his 2nd VC],
asked King George VI?
“In my respectful opinion, sir,
Upham has won the VC several
times over.’(Major General Howard ‘Kip’ Kippenberger, Commander, 20th Canterbury’s)
After the war, ‘Pug’ Upham declined the £10,000 offered him by his local community, to buy a farm; instead he initiated the C H Upham Educational Scholarship for children of ex-servicemen; he took a loan to buy a farm.
I’ve just read on the internet of Charles Upham’s heroic efforts in war-time: they are very humbling, very humbling indeed.
And so I dedicate this page to ‘Pug’ Upham – and to all those who have defended, and continue to defend, our personal freedom.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them…
